Hospice

Over the weekend Lottie turns
from patient dying in hospice to dying now.
Monday’s when the caregiver learns
it. The first thing Lottie says is

What happens now? What else
can the caregiver say? You’re going to die.
To Lottie’s face. But I’m afraid.
She’s crying now. What will it be like?

More likely than not you won’t wake up.
No God, no angels, no spouse,
children, parents waiting to take you up.
Afterward the caregiver cries.

Who is she to tell this dying woman
what will happen next? She knows too well
everything she can’t & doesn’t know.
It could be awful. Heaven or hell.
